PRP Press Release - Monday, June 26, 2017
By Chuck Greenslate
Portsmouth Raceway Park hosted B & B Recycling Kids Night Saturday, and both young and old alike were treated to a great show as 109 race teams filled the pit area.
Longtime Late Model ace Delmas Conley added to his Hall of Fame resume, as he recorded his 556th career victory. Proctorville’s Craig Christian recorded the victory in the Modifieds. “The Rosemount Rocket” Billy Staker prevailed in the Limited Lates. Piketon’s Jason Spillman captured the win in the B & B Recycling “Brawl For It All” Sport Mod Spectacle, and Josh Francis grabbed the checkers in the Ohio Valley Roofers Legends Car Series.
There were 23 Giovanni’s Pizza Late Models on hand Saturday, and on PRP’s annual evening dedicated to treating kids, it proved to be the Late Model Division’s elder statesman, 75-year-old Delmas Conley, who provided the entertainment. Conley started on the pole of the A-Main but faded back to third. Kenny Christy led the first eight laps before Conley managed to battle back on the high side and take the lead for good.
Once Conley put his Rocket Chassis on the point, no one would contest him. Christy would finish as the runner-up with Freddie Carpenter, Josh Bocook, and Shannon Thornsberry rounding out the top five. Kenny Howell, Rod Conley, Robbie Lewis, Ben Adkins, and Joshua Hall made up the remainder of the top 10.
Tyler Carpenter would run in the top three for much of the race and would climb to as high as second, but while in third, he had a tire expire on lap 22 of the 25-lap feature.
Craig Christian was dominant in the R.W. Rental and Supply Modifieds. He led every lap of the A-Main en route to his first PRP win of the season.
Lucasville’s Jeremy Rayburn placed second to score yet another top-five finish. Jason Bilyeu came home third. Justin Cooper finished fourth, and after being involved in an early caution and going to the tail, Austin Francis battled back to get fifth. Tim Rayburn, Aaron Branham, Eddie Harmon, Brandon Urban, and Matthew Edmisten rounded out the top 10. Branham was named the Markwest Ranger Pipeline Hard Charger, as he advanced seven positions in the Modified Feature.
Just as Delmas Conley did in the Giovanni’s Pizza Late Models, Portsmouth’s Billy Staker became the first repeat winner this season in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Late Model Division. Mike Meyers, Evyian Terry, Cameron Logan, Brett Kennard, Joe Whitt, Randy Ross, Ronnie Whitt, John Melvin, and Charlie Mullett made up the top 10.
The M & M Inflatables Sport Mod Divisioin took center stage Saturday at PRP as the division raced in The B & B Recycling “Brawl For It All” Sport Mod Spectacle. Thirty-six Sport Mods were in attendance for the $1,000-to-win show.
Jason Spillman led all every lap of the Sport Mod A-Main, but South Webster’s Luke Jordan gave Spillman quite a challenge in the closing laps. Jordan looked low a number of times, but every time he did, Spillman held his ground to protect the inside line.
Jordan would have to settle for second with Brian Sammons, Jr., Alan Gulley, and Derek Richmond rounding out the top five. Brian Sammons, Sr. Mitchel Fields, Jr., B-Main winner Brayden Berry, Rick Neace, and Brandon Carver completed the top 10.
West Union’s Josh Francis held off Shaun Scott and Steve Duderstadt to take the checkers in the Ohio Valley Roofers Legends Car Series. John Gutman, Derek Minshew, Cole Demint, Ashley Tackett, Bobby Inlow, Rob Puckett, and Tom Partin completed the top 10.
Portsmouth Raceway Park will be in action this coming Saturday featuring the first of three Lucas Oil Late Model events. This coming weekend will bring The Independence 60 presented by R.W. Rental and Supply paying Late Models $12,000 to win. Also on the card will be Modifieds as well as Limited Lates.
Scott Bloomquist, who is the current points leader in the Lucas Oil Series, won last year’s Independence 60 at PRP.
